Crystal Cave

Kate points at a small opening in a large pile of rocks. “That’s the entrance to Crystal Cave.”

Sparky swims forward and sticks his head into the entrance. “You’ll need to give your eyes time to adjust to the darkness,” he informs us, “so that you won’t swim into anything sharp.”

Bella flashes me a nervous glance. I nod my head in understanding. She really doesn’t like the dark, so I’m not sure if she’ll be able to go into the cave.

Maria swims over and joins Sparky, and then the two of them disappear inside.

Dolly glances over at Bella. “Would you like to ride on my back?” she asks kindly.

A look of relief appears on Bella’s face. “That would be wonderful. Thanks, Dolly.”

Bella wraps her arms around Dolly and lets her tail rest on the dolphin’s back. I watch as the two of them slowly enter the cave.

“You know what?” Kate says to me. “It might be a good idea if Freddie took you in, since he knows the cave really well.”

Unlike Bella, I’m not afraid of the dark. However, I’m also not afraid to accept help.

“That sounds like a good idea,” I say, wrapping my arms around Freddie and resting my tail on his back. With Kate in the lead, the three of us enter the cave.

At first, I can’t see much of anything. But as Freddie swims deeper into the cave, light appears in front of us. When we emerge from the narrow tunnel, Freddie takes us to the surface of the water.

Wow! Crystal Cave is the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen! Crystals, in every colour, hang from the walls and ceiling. The pinholes of sunlight, streaming into the cave, bounce from crystal to crystal—creating a disco-ball effect.

“This is definitely a sparkling sight,” I tell my friends.

Bella nods her head, then asks, “But how are we ever going to find the one that’s full of light when this place is lit up like a Christmas tree!”

“If we look closely, there must be one crystal that’s sparklier than all the others,” Kate says.

Since we can’t reach the crystals on the ceiling, we decide that the clue wouldn’t be hidden up there. We also realize that the red, green, purple, and blue crystals aren’t as sparkly as the yellow, orange, and pink crystals.

We spread out and look around every yellow, orange, and pink crystal we can reach. But after ten minutes of searching, we still don’t have the next clue.

“We must be missing something,” Bella says. “Anna, can you please read the last two lines of the clue again?”

“Sure,” I reply. “Soon you’ll see a sparkling sight. The one you want is full of light.”

“Hmm. . . full of light,” Bella mutters. A second later, a big smile breaks out on her face. She points to the rays of sunlight streaming into the cave. “Maybe we’ve been looking for the wrong thing,” she exclaims.

I know exactly what Bella is thinking. “Instead of looking for a sparkly crystal we should be looking for a crystal filled with sunlight!” I say excitedly.
